Why does the check ask how sure I am?

Accepted Answer

Because answering correctly by guessing is not the same as knowing. A right answer you were sure of scores full marks; a right answer you doubted scores three quarters, since a lucky guess is not yet knowledge. A wrong answer scores zero however sure you were — the score never claims readiness you did not show.

Does taking the check actually help me learn?

Yes. Being tested on material before studying it improves later recall, including for the questions answered incorrectly. It is one of the most reliably replicated results in the science of learning, and it is why every Study Plan chapter opens with a check rather than a lecture.
